Mary Beard est diplômée de philosophie et d'histoire de l'art l'Université de Cambridge au Royaume-Unis. Elle soutint sa thèse en philosophie en 1982 intitulée "L'Etat de la religion à la fin de la République romaine : une étude basée sur le travail de Cicéron". Elle enseigna au King's College de Londres entre 1979 et 1983. Elle devint ensuite professeure à Cambridge puis l'Université de Chicago, et à l'Université de Berkley en Californie.
Elle a écrit des programmes télévisés pour la BBC sur le thème de la Rome antique depuis 2010 et son premier documentaire sur Pompéi "Pompeii : the life and death of a roman city".
